One clean closed path per letter
Every letter is a single closed path — no open endpoints, no overlapping segments, no duplicate or zero-length nodes. Those artifacts are exactly what hangs up a router or produces a wavy edge. Counters (the holes in an A, O, or R) are proper compound paths, not filled over. The cleaner the outline, the cleaner the routed face.
Fonts outlined, at fabrication scale
Convert all type to outlines in the production file — the router cuts the paths literally, so live text that could reflow or substitute is a risk. Build the letters at final fabrication size so nothing is scaled or guessed at the machine. Keep a separate editable master in case the wording or layout changes later.
Layer for faces, returns, and trim
A channel-letter sign is not just the front face. Put the faces, the returns (the sides that give the letter depth), and any trim cap or backer on separate named layers, each as clean closed paths. That lets the fabricator route the faces, form the returns, and handle the trim without untangling one merged outline — the same discipline as any production sign file.
