SVG files for Cricut and Silhouette Craft cutters cut paths, not pictures.
Cricut Design Space cuts best from SVG files and also accepts DXF; images such as PNG and JPG have to be traced inside the app first. Silhouette Studio's basic edition opens DXF, while importing SVG and PDF needs the Designer Edition or higher. For either, send closed shapes, welded or outlined text, and one color per material layer.
What each app opens
| App | Best vector format | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Cricut Design Space | SVG | DXF also works; PNG and JPG are traced in the app and lose detail |
| Silhouette Studio (basic) | DXF | SVG and PDF import need the Designer Edition or higher |
| Silhouette Studio Designer Edition | SVG | Keeps colors and layers better than DXF |
File checklist
- Closed shapes for everything that should be cut out.
- Script text welded so letters connect, or converted to outlines.
- One color per vinyl or material layer.
- No hidden background rectangle around the design.
- Details no smaller than the blade and material can cut and weed.
Why a traced PNG cuts badly
When the app traces an image, it guesses the edges. Small text breaks up, curves get bumpy and thin parts vanish. A file drawn as vector from the start gives the blade smooth, closed paths to follow.
See vinyl cutting artwork requirements for line weights and weeding.
Selling cut files
If you sell SVG cut files, buyers open them in both apps. Shipping an SVG plus a DXF covers Silhouette users on the basic edition.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best file format for Cricut?
SVG. Cricut Design Space keeps the layers and shapes, while PNG and JPG have to be traced in the app.
Why won't Silhouette Studio open my SVG?
The basic edition doesn't import SVG. Use a DXF, or upgrade to the Designer Edition or higher.
Why does my design cut into pieces?
Script letters weren't welded, or the shapes overlap. Weld the text and merge overlapping shapes of the same color.
