Vector files for VCarve and Aspire Toolpaths need closed, clean vectors.

Vectric VCarve and Aspire import vector files such as DXF, SVG, EPS, AI and PDF. Pocket, profile and V-carve toolpaths need closed vectors, so every shape you want machined should be a single closed path, with no overlapping duplicates and no tiny gaps. Set the artwork at real size in the units the job uses, and convert text to outlines.

Formats Vectric imports

DXF is the most common CNC exchange format; SVG, EPS, AI and PDF also import. Whatever the format, what matters is the geometry inside: closed paths, no duplicates and the right scale.

Why closed vectors matter

A pocket toolpath clears the area inside a shape, so the shape must be closed for the software to know what is inside. Profile toolpaths cut along a shape and need it closed to cut a part out. Open vectors are flagged, and the toolpath either skips them or follows them as single lines.

File checklist

  • Every shape to be machined is one closed vector.
  • No duplicate vectors on top of each other.
  • No tiny stray segments or dots.
  • Real size, in the units of the job.
  • Text converted to outlines.
  • No inner detail smaller than the bit you plan to use can cut.

Bit size and fine detail

A router bit can't cut a corner sharper than its own radius, and fine details smaller than the bit disappear. Simplifying very small details in the vector before toolpathing saves surprises.

Frequently asked questions

What file format is best for VCarve?

DXF is the usual choice, and SVG, EPS, AI and PDF import too. The format matters less than closed, clean geometry.

Why won't VCarve create a pocket toolpath?

The vector is most likely open or has a duplicate on top of it. Pockets need a single closed shape.

Can I use a traced logo in Aspire?

You can, but traced art is full of small fragments and gaps. A redraw with closed, smooth vectors toolpaths cleanly.
