JPEG saves space by discarding detail in 8×8 pixel blocks and by storing color at a lower resolution than brightness. A hard edge between red and white comes back slightly smeared, with faint blocky ringing around it, and every re-save adds more. Image Trace treats all of it as artwork: curves wobble, a thin band of in-between color runs along each edge, and the white background is traced as a shape unless you tick Ignore White.
In Illustrator that means hundreds of anchors to drag, a Swatches panel full of near-identical colors, and lettering you can't edit. When will Image Trace handle a JPG on its own?
When the JPG is large, sharp and saved at high quality, and the design is one or two flat colors. Try the Black and White Logo preset with Ignore White, raise Noise to drop the specks, then Expand. That's often fine for a quick mockup. Small, heavily compressed or multicolor JPGs are where tracing falls apart.
Why does my traced JPG have so many colors?
JPEG stores color at lower resolution than brightness and blends edges during compression, so a two-color logo really contains dozens of in-between shades. A color trace keeps many of them as separate fills. We set each real color once as a global swatch, so the file has exactly the colors the design uses.
Can you match my brand colors exactly?
Yes, if you send them. Give us PMS, CMYK or hex values and we build the swatches from those. Without them we sample the cleanest area of the JPG, which can sit slightly off the original because compression shifts color.
My only copy is a photo or a scan. Will that work?
Usually, yes. A designer redraws from the image rather than tracing it, so perspective, glare and paper texture don't end up in the file. Send the sharpest, most head-on version you have; fine details the photo can't resolve may need you to confirm them.
