Gold and metallic colors in vector files A gold gradient on screen is not gold ink.

Metallic gold and silver can't be mixed from CMYK, so a vector file has to mark them as their own color. Set the metallic areas as a named spot color (often a Pantone metallic such as 871 C for gold or 877 C for silver), keep them as flat shapes on their own layer, and tell the shop which finish you want: metallic ink, foil or metallic vinyl. A gold gradient or shine effect in the logo is a picture of gold; it prints as yellow-brown unless the shop simulates it on purpose.

Why CMYK can't print metallic

Metallic finishes reflect light because of particles or foil in the material itself. Cyan, magenta, yellow and black inks only absorb light, so no mix of them looks metallic on paper or fabric. A screen shows gold by drawing light and dark tones next to each other; print can only copy those tones, not the shine.

How to set metallic areas up in a vector file

  • Make each metallic area a flat, closed shape, not a gradient.
  • Fill it with a named spot color. A Pantone metallic name tells the shop exactly which ink you mean.
  • Put metallic shapes on their own layer, separate from the regular colors.
  • Outline text that should be metallic, so the shapes don't change if a font is missing.
  • Keep a regular-color version of the logo too, for jobs where metallic isn't available.

What each process needs

Metallic finishes by production process
ProcessHow the metallic is madeWhat the file needs
Screen printingA metallic ink on its own screenThe metallic area as one spot-color separation
Foil stamping or hot foilA foil pressed through a dieThe foil area as a solid shape on its own layer; the die is made from it
Vinyl signs and decalsMetallic or chrome vinyl, cut and weededClosed cut paths for the metallic pieces
Digital (CMYK) printNo true metallic; a printed imitationEither a flat color stand-in or a shaded gold image, chosen on purpose

Logos with bevels, shine and gradients

Many logos that look gold were drawn with highlights, bevels and gradients. For screen printing, foil or vinyl those effects have to become flat shapes: a base metallic plus, if wanted, a few solid highlight shapes in another color. A designer decides which parts of the shine to keep as shapes and which to drop, because a cutter or a single foil die can't reproduce a gradient.

That is what happened on the Deschutes Collision mark, where the shine on the metal letters was redrawn as shapes: see the job.

Ask the shop before you send

Metallic options differ between shops and materials. Ask which metallic inks, foils or vinyls they stock, and whether they want the metallic as a spot color, a separate layer or a separate file. Matching their naming saves a round of corrections.

Frequently asked questions

Can CMYK print gold?

No. CMYK can print a gold-looking image with shading, but not a metallic finish. True gold needs a metallic ink, foil or metallic vinyl.

Which Pantone colors are metallic gold and silver?

Pantone's metallic range includes 871 C, a common gold, and 877 C, a common silver. Ask the shop which metallic inks they actually stock before you choose.

Should the gold in my logo be a gradient?

Not in the production file. Keep the metallic area as a flat spot color; any shine you want has to be drawn as separate solid shapes.

Can you convert my gold logo to vector?

Yes. We redraw it by hand as closed shapes, with the metallic areas set as their own spot color and layer, in AI, EPS, SVG and PDF.
