How to open vector files without Illustrator You don't need Illustrator to open a vector file.
You can open most vector files without Illustrator. SVG opens in any web browser. An AI file saved with PDF content, Illustrator's default, opens in any PDF reader. Inkscape, which costs nothing, can edit SVG, PDF and most AI files, and EPS once Ghostscript is installed. If the file is going to a printer or sign shop, you often don't need to open it at all: send it as it is.
The quick answer, by format
| Format | To view it | To edit it at no cost | Paid editors |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI | Any PDF reader or browser, if it was saved with PDF content | Inkscape (it imports the PDF content) | Affinity Designer, CorelDRAW |
| EPS | Inkscape, once Ghostscript is installed | Inkscape with Ghostscript | Affinity Designer, CorelDRAW, Acrobat Pro (converts it to PDF) |
| SVG | Any web browser | Inkscape | Affinity Designer, Figma (import) |
| Any PDF reader or browser | Inkscape (import) | Acrobat Pro, Affinity Designer | |
| DXF | LibreCAD or Autodesk DWG TrueView | LibreCAD, or Inkscape (import) | AutoCAD, CorelDRAW |
AI files
Illustrator saves a PDF copy of the artwork inside every AI file unless the “Create PDF Compatible File” option is switched off. That copy is what a PDF reader, a browser or Inkscape shows you, so an AI file usually opens fine without Illustrator.
If you see a blank page or the message “This is an Adobe Illustrator file that was saved without PDF Content”, the sender switched that option off. Ask them to save it again with the option on, or to export a PDF or SVG for you.
EPS files
EPS is PostScript, an older page-description language, so it needs software that can interpret it. Inkscape uses Ghostscript for this: install Ghostscript first, then import the EPS.
Many EPS files also carry a small preview image. The thumbnail you see in a file browser can be that preview rather than the artwork, which is why an EPS can look blurry before you open it properly.
SVG files
Drag an SVG into any web browser to view it, or open it in Inkscape to edit it. An SVG can still wrap a pasted-in photo or screenshot, so check that the artwork itself is paths before you send it to a cutter. Here is how to check whether a file is really vector.
Opening vector files in Photoshop
Photoshop can open AI, EPS and PDF files, but it turns them into pixels at the size you choose in the import dialog. That copy is no longer vector. To keep the artwork vector inside a Photoshop document, place it as a Smart Object instead, and never save the rasterized copy back as your logo file.
Often you don't need to open it at all
If the file is for a printer, sign shop, laser shop or embroidery digitizer, forward the AI, EPS or PDF unchanged. Opening it in another app and saving again can drop spot colors, layers or fonts the shop needs. Which file to send, by who is receiving it.
Every VectorWiz order includes PDF and SVG files alongside AI and EPS, so you can preview your artwork without Illustrator and pass the AI or EPS straight to your shop.

Frequently asked questions
Can I open an AI file without Illustrator?
Usually, yes. If it was saved with PDF content, which is Illustrator's default, any PDF reader or browser shows it, and Inkscape can open it for editing.
Why does my AI file say it was saved without PDF content?
The person who saved it switched off “Create PDF Compatible File”. Only Illustrator can open that file. Ask them to save it again with the option on, or to export a PDF or SVG.
Can Photoshop open AI and EPS files?
Yes, but it rasterizes them into pixels at the size you pick. Place the file as a Smart Object if you need it to stay vector inside the Photoshop document.
Which app opens the most vector formats at no cost?
Inkscape. It opens SVG, imports PDF and most AI files, imports DXF, and imports EPS once Ghostscript is installed.
